J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books hit the pop culture scene like a revolution. And like any true phenomenon, they spawned a series of board games -- some better than others. Here are my picks for the best five board games based on the world of Harry Potter and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
1. Mystery at HogwartsIt bears more than a passing resemblance to Clue, but Mystery at Hogwarts has just enough originality to warrant its own place in your game collection. A roaming ghost and special die are among the enhancements, and the game works well with the Harry Potter theme.
Two trivia games have been published to date -- one filled with questions from "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," and the other with questions from "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." Either game will challenge players to determine who is the most fanatical Potter fan.
A foam ball floats in mid-air and you must navigate it through a course of obstacles. Sound like magic? Well, maybe it is. But that's really how you play this game -- the ball truly does float in the air.
4. Harry Potter Wizard's Dice (Dicers)Clear dice with figures from the Harry Potter universe are the pieces for this clever game. The basic game is pretty simple, but the advanced rules add more meat.
The starter set is inexpensive, but this is a collectible game, so you may wind up purchasing booster packs. Players cast (toss) the stones, trying to generate good combinations. The most basic game plays a bit like Rock, Paper, Scissors -- spell beats potion, potion beats charm, charm beats spell. More advanced games have additional rules.
