Top 5 Best Games with Animal Themes

By Erik Arneson, About.com

Animal games may have cute artwork, but the gameplay can be as serious here as anywhere. My picks for the best animal-themed games include Frank's Zoo and four others. (Cat lovers should look for their favorite animal in a separate list.)

1. Frank's Zoo

Instead of suits, players are dealt a hand full of animals. And each animal can only "eat" certain other animals. The goal is to be the first player to get rid of all of your animals.

2. Hare and Tortoise

To move forward, you must first move backward -- because moving backward earns you the points you need to move forward! The movement system ties in nicely to the theme, as anyone who tries to sprint to a victory will assuredly end up losing. This was the first game to ever win the prestigious Spiel des Jahres, Germany's award for Family Game of the Year.

3. Dogville - A Dog's Life

A loose simulation of what it's like to be a dog. Players compete to find four bones and return them home, but along the way they're confronted with rival dogs and the dog catcher. This game has been released under both names, Dogville and A Dog's Life.

4. Gouda! Gouda!

Mice race across planks, ropes, books, etc., to be the first to get to the cheese. A light and fun game, also good for children. The rules include several variants which can help to better suit the game to the skill level of the players.

5. Mouse Island

Mouse Island is a children's game, except that it has rules available that make it a game for adults. The basic premise in the kid's game is to get your mouse to its cheese. Nice solid maple tiles add to the pleasure of playing this game, which was designed by Don Green, designer of the abstract masterpiece Octi.
