Knights - Designed by Jason Smulevitch

An entry in the 2004 Shared Pieces Game Design Competition

By Erik Arneson, About.com

Materials

Chess Board (8x8 game board)
4 Chess Knights (2 white, 2 black)
60 Gaming Stones
Red, White, and Blue poker chips (to keep score)

You can print this 8x8 game board (PDF) with black and white squares, this one (PDF) with gray and white squares, or this one (PDF) with blue and white squares.

Overview

The players move the knights around the board and collect points for landing on squares that have never been visited before. Once a square has been visited, it is marked with a stone and it can never be visited again.

Setup

Place the 4 Knights in the 4 center squares on their own colors (ie the white pieces are on the white squares and the black pieces are on the black squares).

Randomly determine who will play white (and like in Chess, white goes first).

Game Play

On their turn, a player moves any of the 4 knights in a legal move for a chess knight (2 squares in one direction, 1 square in a perpendicular direction), as long as they land on a square that does not have a stone on it. The player immediately places a stone on the square they just left. They then score points based on the color of the piece they moved and the square it lands on:

Move -- Points

  • Opposing colored knight onto an opposing colored square -- 1 Point (White chip)
  • Opposing colored knight onto a friendly colored square -- 2 Points (Red chip)
  • Friendly colored knight onto an opposing colored square -- 2 Points (Red chip)
  • Friendly colored knight onto a friendly colored square -- 3 Points (Blue chip)
The player collects the appropriate chip and their turn ends.

Game End

The game ends when none of the knights have a legal move. Players add up the their points, and the player with the highest total wins. If there is a tie, black is declared the winner to compensate for white going first.
