Free Parking

By Erik Arneson, About.com

Gameplay in Brief:

Players try to accumulate points by keeping their parking meter out of violation and avoiding Officer Jones when it is.

The Basics:

Free Parking was published by Parker Brothers in 1988. No game designer was credited. Free Parking is for 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up.

Game Contents:

90 playing cards (38 Feed the Meter cards, 36 point cards, 16 special cards), 32 Second Chance cards, 4 parking meters with bases, card tray, rule book.

More About Free Parking:

The card game Free Parking is related to Monopoly, but only superficially. The artwork and the name clearly come from the real estate game, but the gameplay is nothing like Monopoly. Players attempt to earn points by completing various tasks (doctor's appointment, paying taxes, lunch downtown, etc.) while there's time on their parking meter.

I bought a complete copy of this game at a Goodwill thrift store in Harrisburg, Pa., for 50 cents in March 2000.
