In January of 2000, the Spielfrieks email discussion group was founded and now has more than 1,600 members. Spielfrieks is devoted to "open discussion of sophisticated board and card games, with an emphasis on German or European titles."

In 2001, a series of retrospective polls were conducted to determine the Meeples Choice Award winners going back to 1995. The Meeples Choice Award is given to the three most popular games released in each year. Voting is open to every member of Spielfrieks. The votes are generally taken each May, and only games released during the prior calendar year are eligible.
