Top 5 Gamers' Choice Award Winners

By Erik Arneson, About.com

The Gamer's Choice Awards were started by the Strategy Gaming Society in 2000 to highlight the best new strategy games published each year. They have quickly become one of the most important gaming awards available. Here are my picks for the best games to win a GCA.

1. San Marco

Its unique "split the pie" mechanism -- one player divides a set of cards and the other player(s) choose who gets which pile -- make San Marco a game of constant tough decisions. Players compete to build their influence in various regions of Venice.

2. Battle Cry

Various U.S. Civil War battles can be simulated in this game by using modular terrain. Fairly simple rules make it a great choice as an introductory wargame, but the strategy is deep enough that you'll definitely be back for more.

3. Tikal

Deep in the jungles of Central America, players compete to uncover treasure among archeological ruins. The gameboard and other components are wonderful to look at, the rules are straight-forward, and the theme will appeal to the Indiana Jones in you. Just don't play with opponents who over-analyze -- doing so can make the game drag a bit.

4. Lost Cities

Five ruins are waiting to be explored, but you would be unwise to finance expeditions to all five, because if you don't discover enough in one area you'll score negative points for it. This quick-paced two-player game offers plenty of tough choices.

5. Paths of Glory

A wargame that covers World War I from the beginning through American involvement. This is the number three overall rated game at BoardGameGeek.com and has won praise from many gamers with comments like, "stunning blend of simulation and game."
