Each player takes on the role of an ancient civilization, trying to expand their empires. Trade plays an important role in Civilization, so you have to attempt to maintain decent relations with the opponents you're working very hard to defeat.
In 1991, Avalon Hill published an expansion called Advanced Civilization. The original game has also been published by at least six other companies.
