Balderdash

By Erik Arneson, About.com

The Basics:

Balderdash, originally published in 1984 by Parker Brothers, was designed by Laura Robinson and Paul Toyne.

Why Balderdash is Part of the Games Timeline:

Balderdash is the most popular commercial implementation of the parlor game often called Fictionary.

Here are the other games I believe are the most culturally and historically significant games published since 1800.

More About Balderdash:

One player reads aloud a word that few people have ever heard, let alone used in actual conversation. The other players then write down definitions, trying to make them sound reasonable because you win points for every player that thinks your definition is the real one. An edition known as Beyond Balderdash, which introduced new categories (e.g. movies, people and acronyms), was later published by Canada Games and Parker Brothers / Hasbro.
