Axis & Allies was originally published by Milton Bradley in 1984. A new edition was published by Wizards of the Coast / Avalon Hill (a division of Hasbro) in 2004, and a special edition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Avalon Hill (Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition) was published in 2008.

One of Milton Bradley's Gamemaster series of games, the original Axis & Allies includes every arena from World War II. Numerous versions of A&A have been published in recent years:
- In 2000, Avalon Hill published Axis & Allies: Europe.
- 2001 saw the release of Axis & Allies: Pacific by Avalon Hill.
- In 2004, Avalon Hill published Axis & Allies: D-Day, along with a revised version of the original game.
- In 2005, Avalon Hill released the first wave of Axis & Allies Miniatures. Several expansions, including a series of Axis & Allies Naval Miniatures, were also released.
- In 2006, Axis & Allies: Battle of the Bulge was published by Avalon Hill.
- In 2007, Axis & Allies: Guadalcanal was published by Avalon Hill.
- In 2008, Avalon Hill published the Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition.
- In 2009, Avalon Hill released Axis & Allies 1942 Edition and Axis & Allies Pacific 1940.
