Prehistoric family fun

The dinosaur board games and card games listed here are in alphabetical order. You can discuss these games and find even more dinosaur games on the Board Games Forum.

Bitin' Off Hedz
From Cheapass Games, this 1998 board game theorizes that dinosaurs were their own worst enemies -- they didn't go extinct from some outside force; suicide is the reason the terrible lizards no longer walk the earth. For 3 to 10 players.

Dinosaurs and Things
Designed for players as young as 4, this Aristoplay game comes with four "fossilized" playing pieces, 36 dinosaur cutouts and three decks of question cards. For 2 to 4 players.

Dino Hunt
From Steve Jackson Games, this game earned the Dinosaur Society Seal of Approval because all of the dinosaur information and art in the game conforms to current scientific knowledge. Players travel through time, visiting different eras in which dinosaurs lived, trying to capture them for a modern-day zoo. The SJG site features a curriculum guide for parents and teachers For 2 or more players, ages 8 and up.

Dinomite
Designed by 8-year-old Joshua White in 1987 (and published by University Games), this race game finds players moving from the Stego-Start-Us to the Dino-Refuge, learning about dinosaurs along the way.

Dizzy Dizzy Dinosaur
Pressman's 1987 game went through a color change around 1993, when the main dinosaur changed from green to purple. (Can't imagine why...) The title character is a wind-up toy; the game also comes with 20 "prehistoric" markers, special dice and the board.

Flintstones 3-D Chess Set
From Hanna-Barbera Productions, a chess game with the characters from the Flintstones in place of the traditional playing pieces. Released in 1993.

Jurassic Park Games
The original Jurassic Park board game was published in 1992 (for 2 to 4 players); Milton Bradley also produced a game based on Jurassic Park: The Lost World in 1999, and Jurassic Park III Island Survival Game is a clever family game.

King Zor: The Dinosaur Game
Produced by Ideal in 1962, this game is based on the toy of the same name. It came with four cavemen to represent the players (green, yellow, red, blue), 16 dinosaurs (four each in the same colors), a variety of dinosaur eggs, two decks of cards, a spinner, and the game board. The board was illustrated with about two dozen dinosaurs, plus various geological features.

Land of the Lost
Milton Bradley produced a game based on the television series of the same name in 1975.

T-Rex
This 1999 card game from Rio Grande Games (English) and Hans im Gluck (German) puts players in the role of researchers trying to collect dinosaur eggs as quickly as possible in order to protect them from a meteor shower. Some eggs are more valuable than others; the winner is the researcher who collects the most points in dinosaur eggs. For 3 to 5 players; about 45 minutes.
