Great Games for Young Children

By , About.com Guide

Buying games for young children can be tricky. Many of the games available have the ability to drive parents crazy. The games on this list can be enjoyed by young children but give players enough decisions to make that parents will not hate the idea of playing one more time. These games are also easily available at bix box stores such as Target and Toys R Us.

1. Electronic Guess Who? Extra

For 2 players, ages 6 and up.
The classic Guess Who? is a good deduction game that parents can enjoy with their children. In addition to the electronic interface, Electronic Guess Who? Extra adds 120 new faces on five themed cards (kids, funny faces, animals, monsters, and household items) to the original 24 faces. There are also four ways to play.

2. Hula Hippos

For 2 to 4 players, ages 5 and up.
This dexterity game will have players laughing out loud. One player spins the hula hoop on the table, and then everyone quickly tries to flick their hippos into position so that they are inside the hoop when it stops spinning. The first player who is able to get four hippos inside the hoop wins the game. But if you don't win the first time, don't worry: this game is quick and addictive, so chances are you'll be playing again right away.

3. Sorry! Sliders

For 1 to 4 players, ages 6 and up.
Sorry! Sliders is a fun, simple dexterity game, having little in common with the original Sorry! other than the brand name. A ball bearing has been inserted under each pawn, allowing them to slide across the board smoothly. Your target may be a spot on the board, or one of your opponent's pawns. Four games can be played: Race For Home, Instant Home, Instant Sorry! or Danger Dots.

4. Star Wars Galactic Heroes

For 2 players, ages 5 and up.
Three different editions of this battle game are available (Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. General Grievous, Anakin Skywalker vs. Count Dooku, and Clone Trooper vs. Super Battle Droid). Each player holds a hand of cards and as they move around the board, battles occur with regularity. Battles are resolved by playing cards, some of which simply have a numerical value and some of which give special powers. The first player to claim six battles wins the game.
