Battle of the Sexes
University Games
2 or more players
Ages 12 and up
Test your knowledge of the opposite sex by answering a series of gender-based questions. $20 to $23.
Democrazy
Eurogames
by Bruno Faidutti
4 to 10 players
Ages 12 and up
As the game progresses, players vote on new rules, so the game is always changing. An interview with the designer (though the interview is mainly about another of his games) is available. $15.
Fib or Not
Gather Around Games
2 or more players
Ages 10 and up
Players take turns telling stories, true or false, based on the cards they pull. If you can trick the other players into thinking your true ones are false and vice versa, you're well on the way to winning. $25.
Paired Up
Games for All Reasons
by Joan C. Moravick
3 to 6 players or teams
Ages 12 and up
Increase your score by guessing famous pairs -- salt and pepper, Laurel and Hardy, up and down, etc. -- from the clues given. Read more in this interview with the designer. $20.
Ripley's Believe It or Not
University Games
2 or more players
Ages 8 and up
Players move around a map of the world, trying to guess whether "facts" are true or not. And there are some truly wild facts in this game. $20 to $25.
Survivor
Mattel
4 to 8 players
Ages 18 and up
Based on the popular television series, but without the Machiavellian anti-hero, this game should see some time on the game table in January when Survivor II hits the air. Three phases -- outwit, outplay and outlast -- and a voting round are included. $20 to $25.
30 Second Mysteries
University Games
2 or more players
Ages 12 to adult
Two teams compete to solve mysteries, reading each other clues from a card. A great test of deductive logic, very enjoyable for those of us (e.g. me) who like to pretend we can solve mysteries. $25.
Time's Up
R&R Games
4 or more players
Ages 12 and up
Teams compete to guess the names on cards in increasingly difficult rounds of play. Time's Up won a Mensa Best Mind Games Award in 2000; my family loved it. Read more in this interview with the head of R&R Games. $18 to $20.
21st Century 20 Questions
University Games
2 to 6 players
Ages 12 and up
Trivia knowledge is what will rule the day in this game, which tests players on their ability to remember people, places, things and years throughout the 20th century (the 1900s). There's an interesting mix of cards, as some are amazingly easy but others will challenge you. $25 to $30.
Zobmondo!!
Hasbro
by Randy Horn
3 or more players
Ages 16 and up
Outrageous questions like "Would you rather find a dead fly in your salad, or a really long and thick hair in your ice cream?" make this one of the wildest new party games in years. Read more in this interview with the designer. Some content makes this game inappropriate for younger players. If you can track it down, a Zobmondo!! Lite game exists for children. $15 to $20.
