Christmas is my favorite time of the year for many reasons, one of which is the promise of new games to play with my family and friends. This year, there's an abundance of games to choose from -- you'll find my choices for holiday picks below.

Of course, one of the best things about board games is that the good ones never go out of style. Chess, checkers and backgammon have been delighting and challenging players for centuries. Games like Monopoly and Clue are modern classics. I have no doubt some of today's best games will still be played when 2100 rolls around.

And with that, here are some of today's best board games -- the ones which, in my opinion, deserve your consideration as holiday presents this year. Most are available through the retailers listed on our Shopping pages.

Party Games
Games you can play in a light social setting, generally with larger groups of players.

Strategy Games
Most of these fall into the "family strategy game" category -- games that can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Children's Games
Young children can't always grasp the concepts necessary to play the other games featured here, but these choices are right up their alley.

Updated Classics
Some new versions of modern classics were released this year, and a few include improvements significant enough that you might want to consider buying a copy even if you already own them.

Final Thoughts
Including some suggestions for inexpensive stocking stuffers and a list of the games I game my family for Christmas this year. (We traded gifts over Thanksgiving.)
