Perfect game night for me? It's hard to tell what's "perfect." I'm always happy to be playing games!

In response to the "winning" question, I think I'm more concerned about a "general attitude" of the gaming. No one really remembers which games they won or lost in the past year. But everyone remembers having a great time during a particular game. Having those "great moments" is much better than winning! (i.e. Last night we played Werewolf/Mafia. This one kid nearly had an aneurysm trying to convince us he wasn't the werewolf when everyone was going to vote him lynched. It was the most hilarious thing I saw, especially since he was right and just couldn't convince us of it.)

However, a perfect game night for me should contain such diverse elements as: Everyone is playing games at all times. There is a lot of laughing. There is food. I don't have to explain any rules. Whenever games are played, the people "know" how to play. (Thus in a game which requires taking tricks, the people know how to play. In a game which requires negotiation, the people will negotiate. In a game which requires silliness, the people will be silly! Etc.) My stupid budgie doesn't crap on any games (since we can't get her to go back into her cage... dumb bird). The house is clean and nothing is broken after game night is done. :) We get in two or three "heavy" games (in the German Game Dept). We get in a couple of "wild hilarious laughter" games. We get in some games requiring partners. The games are played well. We actually get in a game of Pictionary (no one will play this with me, go figure. :) ) A couple of new games are introduced. And my wife is actually able to play games with me, and doesn't get mad if I win. :)

My perfect gaming night begins with all 11 of my gaming buddies able to come (someone is always missing). Beyond that - it would depend on the mood I'm in!

Sometimes the "perfect" night is an all-nighter, or a 2 p.m. till 11 p.m. session (Advanced Civilization, or lots of my favorites). To actually experience this, however is rare - once every 10 years! A more "normal" Perfect Night (5 p.m. to 11 p.m.) would include any of the following scenarios:

  1. A Euphrat & Tigris tournament. Three tables of 3 or 4. Play three games, mixing the players between games.
  2. A Battle Cry tournament (everyone plays everyone) with players playing both as the Rebels and the Yanks in each scenario - total flags for the night wins.
  3. A "New Game Night." All the games are new (at least to the majority -- Acquire, Cosmic Encounter, Torres, Ivanhoe, Attila).
  4. My Personal Favorites Night. I get to pick all the games and play whatever I'm in the mood for! (And that could change by the week.) My "current" personal favorites, depending on the mood: Euphrat & Tigris, Ohne Furcht und Adel, Settlers/Seafarers/Cities, Lord of the Rings, Hera & Zeus, Advanced Civilization.
  5. Games I've Designed Night. Sometimes I just like to play games I've designed, or am working on (none are good enough to publish, but our group likes them): Castles & Knights, Daytona, Basketball Powerhouse, and Ringside.

Mainly -- just everyone being together and having a great time (and me winning my share) makes for a perfect gaming night!

The perfect gaming night is having some friends jokingly say "let's play Age" close to midnight and then actually going and playing Age of Renaissance -- and finishing at like 8:30 a.m. Hehe, actually that was a pretty miserable game, but we all laugh about it now.

Perfect game night? That's a tough one. Can it include not having to go to work (or anywhere else) so we can just keep playing? Just in case you can't tell, I prefer gaming weekend.

I've read a bunch of these and I agree with much of it: Have fun and laughs. Well-played games are more important than winning (but of course playing well helps in winning {grin}). All gaming friends present (much easier when I was 12). My wife playing all the games (not just Risk and Spades).

As for the games I would want to play -- anything (if you play it he will come). But my current favorites are: Cosmic Encounter (Eon or Mayfair), Settlers of Catan (any and all expansions), Formula De (pedal to the medal boys), and Spades (an oldie but a goodie).

That's changed considerably in the past year, what with the addition of a baby to the household. I guess a visit to or from grandma for him would be the start. It's not that he's that much of a pain while you're trying to the play the game, but when you say "bits" to the parent of an 11-month-old, what they actually hear is "monstrous choking hazard."

Anyway, with the baby-sitting taken care of, I guess a total of 4 to 6 people is good for us. Settlers is generally a given, but since this is the perfect night, I say skip Settlers and everyone goes to the game store in South Bend and buys a new game. This happened once with four of us and we had a great time playing our four new purchases.

The mix would be one of Cheapass' funnier games, a race game -- Robo Rally, Formula De, Edison & Co. (since I do so love race games for no reason other than the fact that if there's some luck involved, I have a slim chance at beating my very German, very organized wife), a game with cool choking hazards, I mean bits (Big City comes to mind), and maybe a good quicky filler like Halunken und Spelunken or Dark Tower or Stratego.

Finally, since the night is my perfect game night, we play Empire Builder, even though everyone else I know is bored stiff by it.
