Random Thoughts

In Survivor 3, eventual winner Ethan liked Boggle, Backgammon and Pictionary. This time around, no one listed Backgammon, while Vecepia included Boggle and Zoe listed Pictionary.

Chess requires players to think ahead, to look beyond the current situation and analyze the future possibilities. Sean and Zoe both listed Chess. Of course, Survivor 3's Silas enjoyed chess -- and he got blown out of the water when he didn't forsee the tribe switch.

Monopoly, listed by 9 of the 16 players, is a game with the goal of being the only one remaining -- but for my money, Risk is even more cutthroat. Robert, Hunter and Patricia all listed Risk. Survivor 3 contestants who listed Risk were Lex, Kim P., and Brandon. They all lasted pretty far into the game, so perhaps we can expect the same from this trio.

Tammy enjoys Jenga, so keep an eye out on her construction abilities -- she might prove to be useful in building shelter, gathering food, etc.

John listed Sorry as his only game. Well, no offense intended, but any 36-year-old who lists Sorry does not have much chance to think strategically. My prediction: John will not make it to the jury pool.

Likewise, Neleh lists only party games (Guesstures and Scattergories). If she makes it to the jury pool, it will be because she's friendly and charming -- not because of her ability to develop good strategy.

Finally, my pick for the winner (based solely on the board games they've listed) is Robert. His mix of games (Risk, Monopoly and Scrabble) includes two where the goal is to be the last player standing plus one that shows he has some intelligence.

(Now that I've decided that, I took another look at Robert's bio on CBS.com. The fact that he is a limousine operator plays into Survivor very well -- he will know how to make the other players believe he genuinely likes them whether or not he really does. And he's from Queens, enjoys mountain biking and jogging, lifts weights, and he also plays Risk on the computer. He also likes the computer game Snood, which is puzzle-based. All in all, Robert seems like a well-rounded player.)
