The following games have been nominated for the 2001 Spiel des Jahres, one of two German Game of the Year awards and probably the most prestigious award a strategy game can win.

  • Babel by Hagen Dorgathen and Uwe Rosenberg
  • Capitol by Alan R. Moon und Aaron Weissblum
  • Carcassonne by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede
  • Cartagena by Leo Colovini
  • Das Amulett by Alan R. Moon und Aaron Weissblum
  • Die Händler von Genua (The Traders of Genoa) by Rüdiger Dorn
  • Drachendelta (Dragon Delta) by Roberto Fraga
  • Ebbe und Flut (Ebb & Flow) by Wolfgang Werner
  • HexenRennen by Wolfgang Panning
  • Land Unter! by Stefan Dorra
  • Royal Turf by Reiner Knizia
  • San Marco by Alan R. Moon und Aaron Weissblum
  • Zapp Zerapp by Heinz Meiser und Klaus Zoch
Clearly the big winners in terms of nominations were Alan R. Moon and Aaron Weissblum, a design team which has three games (Capitol, Das Amulett, San Marco) on the list.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment is for Reiner Knizia, whose games Africa, Lord of the Rings and Traumfabrik (Dream Factory) did not get nominated. Royal Turf, Knizia's only nomination this year, is a remake of a game first released in 1995. Of course, as productive as Knizia is, there's little doubt that he'll have plenty of opportunity to be nominated for next year's SdJ.

Of the nominees, Carcassonne -- a quick-playing tile placement game that plays well with 2 to 5 players (some say best with 2 to 4) -- probably jumps out as the favorite, with the three Moon-Weissblum games rating as strong contenders.

In addition to the Knizia titles listed above, some gamers believe that these games should have made the list:

  • Attila by Karl-Heinz Schmiel
  • Evo by Philippe Keyaerts
  • Java by Michael Kiesling and Wolfgang Kramer
  • Medina by Stefan Dorra
  • Wyatt Earp by Mike Fitzgerald and Richard Borg
