GMT Games

I was able to talk for a few minutes to Gene Billingsly, one of the founders of GMT Games. We talked about the direction his company was taking with the publication of family-style card games.

Gene mentioned his belief that there's a definite niche in the marketplace for better quality family-style games. He based this belief on the fact that he went shopping for games to play with his kids and didn't find a lot of things he liked. GMT has had good success in the market with Ivanhoe, Battle Line and Galaxy: The Dark Ages; Gene now plays these games with his family.

GMT is about to release Formula Motor Racing (more information below). One of the good things about the "new" card games by GMT is that they're all by renowned designer Reiner Knizia. They're all remakes of previous designs with a bit of tweaking to make them "more American." Knizia was at the show, and I believe there were discussions about future Reiner Knizia game releases.

Formula Motor Racing (by Knizia) is "a fast-paced card game in which each player maneuvers a two car team in search of the Constreuctor's Championship. You control the fate of your cars and those of your opponents through the timely play of cards. The player whose team scores the most points in a series of races wins the championship."

I played a quick game of FMR, and although it's much simpler than many racing games I've played, I did enjoy it.

Many thanks to Mike Rasmuson for filing this and the other reports about GAMA 2001.
