In Torres, players compete to build the largest castles and to have their knights occupy the most important places in those castles. Some gamers have said that it uses the third dimention -- height -- better than any game ever has. Others have criticized it as being too dry and abstract, with a theme that doesn't tie directly into the game. You can post your own thoughts in our Forum.

The Spiel des Jahres, awarded annually, was first presented in 1978. The winner is determined by a group of German-speaking boardgame reviewers. According to the Web site, "The Spiel des Jahres award is a critics' award and is intended to further the cultural value of games, revive the spirit of gaming among friends and in the family and to give orientation for the buyer."

This year's announcement means the team of Kiesling and Kramer is responsible for the two msot recent SdJ winners -- their Tikal won in 1999.
