Earlier this month, American Mensa held its annual Mind Games competition in Atlanta, Georgia. Among the festivities was the presentation of the 2000 Mensa Select Awards to the best five new games. The winners, in alphabetical order:

Games for All Reasons
For 2-6 players, ages 13 and up. "Players complete popular phrases from TV, movies, literature, history, nursery rhymes, proverbs, science, religion, sports and music."

Buffalo Games
For 3-8 players, ages 12 and up. "Imaginiff…your best friend were an animal, or the President was a car, what would they be? Just imagine what the other players are most like, and continue selecting the most popular answer to win the game."
3 Stones
Enginuity Games
For 2 players, ages 8 and up. "Draw a stone from the pouch and play it to make three in a row of your color. If you draw your opponent's color, you must play it anyway."
Time's Up
R&R Games
For 4 or more players, ages 12 and up. "Players scramble to get their teammates to identify as many celebrities from the Deck of Fame as possible before time's up."
Zertz
Rio Grande Games
For 2 players, ages 9 and up. "Zertz is played on a board that gets smaller during the game. The first player to capture 3 white, 4 gray, or 5 black marbles wins."
According to American Mensa's Web site, the games were selected based on aesthetics, instruction, originality, play appeal, and play value. More information is available about American Mensa and the 2000 Mensa Select Awards. The Mensa Select Hall of Fame includes information on past award winners.
