Civilisation

This is simply the best multiplayer game ever invented. I'm an addict and can't ever get enough people to play with. It has elements of social interaction, macro and micro strategy and can be taught to anyone as the game progresses. Even if you don't win, it's great to experience. As you get better as a player, the game gets better, but you don't need to study it or take it that seriously.

Junta
It's like Diplomacy in that social interaction means as much as board level strategy but you don't have to take it so seriously. It's also a lot quicker (not that that's necessarily a good thing...).

Kingmaker
A wargame set in the "War of the Roses." It works equally well from 2 to 12 players. I've even seen women playing it, which is unusual for a wargame.

Squad Leader
Amazingly concise or amazingly Byzantine infantry WW2 wargame. At its simplest, you get a feel for WW2 infantry engagement; at its most complex, you wonder how something so complex can be comprehended by mortal man. One gripe would be that according to the game, WW2 was fought by Russian, American and German soldiers. As far as I can ascertain, the Americans and Russians were only Jonny come latelies...

Backgammon
There's no other game worth losing money playing.
