Desert Island Board Games

Chuck Ledger
Cleveland, Ohio, USA

Having played and collected games for many years, my list has changed many times, but for the past 15 years my number one pick has been...

Cosmic Encounter

As a reviewer once said, "You either love it or hate it." Once you get the mechanics down, the essence of the game is how well you can get the other (players) powers to play against each other while remaining a friend to all. Of course, that's only the tip of the interactive iceberg... And to quote the add from Bonkers... it's never the same game twice.

Die Siedler von Catan (with all the expansions)
When I first heard of the game, I was ready to hate it. I figured the replayability would be low, the interaction non-exitant and the mechanics tedious... Boy, was I wrong. It lived up to its advanced billing and more. While it's possible to get "diced" in the game, you sure can minimize the problem by good placement and sound trading. (BTW, IMHO: Tikal managed to live up to fears that I had for Siedler.)

Kohle, Keis and Knete
Not much more need be said... My favorite trading game.

Merchant of Venus
This game has replaced the "crayon" style training games on my list. For years the best (and one of the only) supply and demand game around was Empire Builder. If played with some of the optional rules, the crayon games are still enjoyable; with Merchant, you need to do less fiddling with the rules to have a good game.

Scrabble
As I looked over the game shelves in the family room, my eyes stopped on the plain blue and gold box that is taken off of the shelf more than any other in our house. It's the granddaddy of word games.
