MadAboutMovies
What kind of game did you invent, Marty?
Marty
I am now putting the final touches on a family game board.

(Seems like a good time to let people know that someone from Paragon Packaging will be a guest in chat at some point in the future. I'll post info in the Forum and in the newsletter.)
Marty
I am in the process of trademarking and copywriting.
MadAboutMovies
Ahhhh, yes, I remember that stage.
boardgamesADM
Marty -- have you playtested the game?
Marty
Yes, within a small circle.
boardgamesADM
Cherise -- how did you playtest Mad About Movies?
MadAboutMovies
I play tested it with family, friends and friends of friends. I had 3 prototypes circulating.
MadAboutMovies
Dragon, did you invent a game too?
Dragon
I've made some little games for myself, not much completed though. Recently I came up with a little card game that is similar to Cheapass Games style.
Marty
Do you reconmend patents for board games?
MadAboutMovies
In most cases, patents aren't necessary.
Marty
That what I thought.
MadAboutMovies
You just need a trademark and copyright.
boardgamesADM
Marty -- my limited experience in this area would lead me to second Cherise's opinion.
Marty
Some game inventors have pursued patents, none with too much success however.
MadAboutMovies
The only reason you would need a patent is if you created a special device with the game.
Marty
I see.
boardgamesADM
Marty -- I have a "Patent of the Month" feature (updated about once every *two* months) in the Forum. Most board game patents seem quite silly when you read them.
MadAboutMovies
Plus, patents are a FORTUNE!! $15,000+
Marty
Yikes.
Dragon
Ouch.
boardgamesADM
Yikes and Ouch to us -- $$$ to the lawyers! :-)
MadAboutMovies
and the government!

Cherise, your reports from Toy Fair were very interesting. Have you followed up on any of the contacts you made there?
MadAboutMovies
Thank you. Yes, some. I'm about 1/3 through the lead pile.
Marty
Cherise... yes and are you going back next year to the toy fair?
MadAboutMovies
ABSOLUTELY!! At first I was stressing out because it cost me a total of $8,000 to be there, but it was well worth it!
MadAboutMovies
Are you going to try to manufacture and sell your card game, Dragon? Or is it with regular playing cards?
Dragon
My game would require special cards.
Dragon
How do you go about getting a trademark and copyright?
boardgamesADM
Dragon -- it's quite easy, actually. There should be any number of Web sites that have the basic information.
MadAboutMovies
A lawyer will do it for you. It's not very expensive... about $400 for the trademark and $150 for the copyright. I have a GREAT lawyer....check out his website at www.angenehm.com.
Marty
Thanks for the lead.
boardgamesADM
Dragon, depending how far you want to go, you could do a "poor man's" copyright for free by mailing yourself the game via certified mail and never opening it. That will help you prove when you created it.
MadAboutMovies
Yeah, and if you do that, be sure to have it notarized.
Marty
Copywrights and trademarks are affordable enough. Just look up PTO office on search engine for address.
MadAboutMovies
I believe the address for the PTO is www.uspto.gov.
MadAboutMovies
Dragon, are you going to pursue developing it?
Dragon
I have thought about manufacturing it, but I am still working on designs for the cards and don't have a very good idea to start the manufacturing process.
This chat continues with a discussion of how much it costs to publish 5,000 games, how soon Cherise will be sold out of her first batch, and much more.
