First, thanks for joining us in what is the first About.com Board Games Chat with a special guest. Let's start with the basics -- what prompted you to create Mad About Movies?

MadAboutMovies
Let's see... I first had the idea to create a music trivia game when I went searching to buy one for myself and couldn't find one anywhere.

boardgamesADM
How did you move from music to movies?

Questions or comments about designing a board game? Post them on the Board Games Forum.

MadAboutMovies
I found a movie trivia game instead and bought it.

boardgamesADM
Did you enjoy that game, or was it lacking something that made you think you could create a better one?

MadAboutMovies
No. The game I bought was terrible!! (I won't mention the name.) It was way too hard, even for a movie buff like myself. Plus, the game play wasn't very fun.

boardgamesADM
Did the fact that the movie trivia game you bought wasn't very fun help you decide to create your own?

MadAboutMovies
I thought that I could do a much better game that the whole family could play together with a good mix of easy and hard questions.

boardgamesADM
What year did you decide to create your own movie trivia game?

MadAboutMovies
About....1994-1995. I actually began writing it in 1996.

boardgamesADM
And how long was it before you had a prototype to test out on friends and family?

MadAboutMovies
1 year. But it was 4 years total before it was available on store shelves.

boardgamesADM
How did you come up with all the questions?

MadAboutMovies
I watched a ton of movies, plus researched books, CD roms and the internet.

boardgamesADM
Watching movies as part of a real job... Ahh, the glory of board games! What are some of your favorite films?

MadAboutMovies
Swingers, Go and When Harry Met Sally are a few of my faves.

Dragon
What genres of films are covered in the game?

Board Games Chat Room

boardgamesADM
Dragon -- as someone who has played the game a couple of times, I can tell you that it includes questions about all genres of films, concentrating on those from 1970 and later. I am a big fan of movies -- majored in Radio-TV-Film at Temple University. So Mad About Movies is great fun for me.

Marty
I am interested in listening to anyone who has published a game.

boardgamesADM
Marty -- with that in mind... Cherise -- please tell us how you found a manufacturer for the game.

Marty
OR a printer if you published it yourself.

MadAboutMovies
I was fortunate enough to find some other inventors up here in Minneapolis. They each recommended a different packaging co. I went with Paragon Packaging.

Marty
What do you mean by packaging co?

MadAboutMovies
A packaging company, such as Paragon Packaging, does the whole game from start to finish. I supplied the graphics, they printed everything, had the board, boxes, etc. manufactured and sent me the final product.

Marty
Yes, I know them... So would you recommend them?

MadAboutMovies
Yes. There are some others too. I'm currently collecting bids from two other companies.

Dragon
Was it difficult getting started with them?

MadAboutMovies
No, not at all. They're pretty patient and helpful to first time inventors.

boardgamesADM
Fwiw, I think the game came out very well. Everything is sturdy, looks very nice, etc.

MadAboutMovies
I know people who have also used Yaquinto and Delano and have been happy with them.

This chat continues with a discussion of the cost of patents, whether or not Cherise is glad she spent $8,000 to be at Toy Fair 2000, and much more.
