Preparing for The Gathering

There won't be a Saturday Morning Gamer next week... because I'll still be gaming at the Gathering of Friends. The Gathering is an annual event at which about 200 people get together to play games for a week. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, with plenty of casual gaming and about four tournaments each day. Look for a full report in two weeks, with plenty of information being posted before that in the About.com Board Games Forum.

Board Games Survivor Island - Amazon Edition

This week in the Board Games Survivor Island game, Age of Steam was eliminated. Only five games remain: Acquire, El Grande, Puerto Rico, Settlers of Catan, and Tigris and Euphrates.

Tigris and Euphrates won a previous edition of Survivor Island, and it could be the first two-time champion in the history of BGSI. Settlers of Catan finished second in that previous edition.

As far as the player competition goes (see the official rules for details), a total of 55 people entered. With five games remaining: 18 players have had both games eliminated, 23 players have had one game eliminated, and 14 players have had no games eliminated.

Games I Can See While Sitting At My Computer

This week, double copies of each of these games arrived from Game Surplus (one copy for me, one to be used at The Gathering's prize table).

  • Blokus, from Sekkoia (a beautiful abstract game)

  • Europa Tour, from Schmidt Spiele (players compete to build a plan to travel through Europe)

  • Paris Paris, from Rio Grande Games (players try to be the most successful business owners in Paris)

Boardgame Top Picks List of the Week

These are the top five board games I haven't played yet, but I hope to play over the next week at The Gathering:

  • Amun Re
  • Cave Troll
  • Inkognito
  • Intrige
  • Puerto Rico

Don't Quote Me

Recognizing quotes from five categories -- Leaders, the Arts, Pop Culture, Life and Literature, and Sports -- will lead you to victory in the trivia board game Don't Quote Me.

About Board Games Forum Post of the Week

From Tamar561:

My family is trying to remember the name of a board game which they played in the 1950s. 3 to 4 players would try to advance around the board with 'pins.' Cards, worth points, factored in and were illustrated with disasters like train wrecks, ships sinking, floods, etc. Looking forward to hearing from you.

About Something Else Site of the Week

The Loch Ness Monster and other sea serpents have always intrigued me, and this page from About.com's Guide to paranormal phenomena, Stephen Wager, is a great source of information.

Green Bay Packers Notes of the Week

Vonnie Holliday, a solid defensive end who had his best years as a Packer while Reggie White was still playing, has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. He signed for $21 million over five years, but due to a huge roster bonus in the third year it's really a two-year, $6.3 million deal. He had turned down an offer from the Packers last year for almost $24 million over six years, including a $5.5 million signing bonus.

Other Off-Topic Thoughts of the Week

1967's Casino Royale is a bizarre movie. Starring as James Bond are David Niven, Peter Sellers, Woody Allen, Terence Cooper, and others. Beth and I received it this week via NetFlix, and it's... uh... unusual. Five directors combined to create what is a disjointed, occasionally humorous film.
