Milestones

The list below includes historically significant and/or "classic" games and the dates they were published.

Please help me out -- what other important games should be added to make the list complete? (I'm looking for games from the 1800s and later, not ancient games like Chess and Go -- and, yes, I do realize that some of these games are little more than ancient games with new themes tacked on, e.g. Chutes and Ladders.)

  • The Mansion of Happiness (1843)
  • The Checkered Game of Life (1860)
  • Pit (1904)
  • Rook (1906)
  • Criss Cross Game (to become Scrabble) (1931)
  • Sorry! (1934)
  • Monopoly (1935)
  • Chutes and Ladders (1943)
  • Scrabble (1948)
  • Candyland (1949)
  • Clue (1949)
  • Yahtzee (1956)
  • Diplomacy (1959)
  • Risk (1959)
  • The Game of Life (1960)
  • Acquire (1962)
  • Twister (1966)
  • Dungeons and Dragons (1973)
  • Trivial Pursuit (1982)
  • Axis and Allies (1984)
  • Pictionary (1986)
  • Settlers of Catan (1995)
Other questions: Do I have any of the dates wrong? (I don't think so, but D&D, for example, is listed as 1973 some places and 1974 in other places.) Are there wargames (other than Risk and A&A) that should be on this list?

Games I'm Playing

A slow week in terms of games played, although Beth and I are going to take part in a murder mystery party for our friend Tom. (It was supposed to be a surprise, but apparently Tom's dad asked him to do something today and then corrected himself by saying, "Oh, never mind. You can't do that because of your surprise party." Which pretty much eliminated the surprise element.)

Board Games Survivor Island - Amazon Edition

This week in the Board Games Survivor Island game, three more games were eliminated: Carcassonne, Hammer of the Scots and Metro. Now BGSI moves into the stage where only one game is eliminated each week until we have a winner.

Game Review of the Week

The 80s Game

The 80's Game challenges players to recall trivia from the 1980s and features a clever movement mechanism. Also available are The 70's Game and The 90's Game.

About Board Games Forum Post of the Week

From Luke:

"I have been playing this game recently named Couronne on the Internet and I would like to know more about it. The site says it's a board game, but I am not really sure (it seems that it would be a bit big for a board game!). The game is sort of like a cross between pool and air-hockey (without the air), where you players have pucks which they hit into the holes of the board with sticks. Has anyone heard of this game? Are there any sites which have info about it?"

About Something Else Site of the Week

X2 is one of the movies I'm most looking forward to this year (now that Daredevil is past). About.com's Guide to Action-Adventure Movies, Fred Topel, caught up with actress Kelly Hu -- who plays Deathstrike -- and asked her a few questions.

Other Off-Topic Thoughts of the Week

I didn't see it myself, but word in the About.com Reality TV Forum is that TV Guide reported in its online edition that Celebrity Mole has been picked up for a second season. That's great news; The Mole is by far my favorite reality show.

Look out for Coach John Chaney, Brian Polk, David Hawkins, and the rest of the Temple Owls -- who started the season 3-11 -- if they sneak into the NCAA basketball tournament with a win the Atlantic 10 conference championship. Here's how Coach Chaney described the Owls' remarkable win over number 10 ranked Xavier: ""If a flea can pull a plow, don't ask no questions," Chaney said. "Hitch his butt up."
