9 November 2002

This week's biggest news for gamers was the passing of Sid Sackson, who may very well be the greatest American game designer of all time. His creations range from the brain-taxing challenges of Acquire to the free-wheeling negotiation of Kohle, Kies & Knete to the abstract genius of Domination (also known as Focus) to the light-but-addictive dice game Can't Stop.

He will be missed greatly.

Games I'm Playing

Got in a game of Can't Stop last night in honor of Sackson. What a great, fast-paced, addictive, maddening dice game. "Come on, be a man -- roll the dice!" Mark, Tom and I played -- with Mark being the only novice. So, naturally, Mark won.

Games I Can See While Sitting At My Computer

Just a couple of new ones this week -- although Mr. Potato Hot Potato Game, Wee Little Piggies, Dragon Strike, and Lord of the Rings - The Confrontation are all still here as well. It's getting pretty crowded again.

  • Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring, from RoseArt (see below for more details)

  • Clue - The Simpsons Edition, from Hasbro (Clue but with characters, locations and weapons from The Simpsons television series)

  • Monopoly - The America Edition, from Hasbro (Monopoly celebrating American heritage; includes some special rules)

Boardgame Top Picks List of the Week

Sid Sackon's legacy will be with us forever. These are my picks for his best five games -- if you disagree, please post your list in the About Board Games Forum.

  • Kohle, Kies & Knete
  • Acquire
  • Can't Stop
  • Metropolis
  • Domination / Focus

Game Review of the Week

Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring

There are many LotR games out there, and this appears to be a new one. Someone found it at New Line Cinema's web site, then someone else posted that it was available at Kohl's, then I couldn't help but go buy a copy...

Here are my initial thoughts. I hope to get in a full game soon.

Email of the Week

From Jan Albartus:

I have created a Flash game, The Mystery Of Time And Space. MOTAS is an online interactive graphic adventure in which the player has to solve puzzles to open the doors to the mystery of time and space.

Thanks, Jan. That's several hours of my life I'll never get back. :-)

Future Emails of the Week can be sent to boardgames.guide@about.com.

Board Games Survivor Island Update

The voting is still going on this week! Take a look at the contenders and let me know what you think. Only votes emailed to boardgames.guide@about.com will be tabulated.

Green Bay Packers Notes of the Week

Excellent. 7-1 and in total control of our destiny, including the ability to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Now we have to bea the teams we're supposed to beat -- like the Detroit Lions this week at Lambeau Field.

Prediction: Packers 27, Lions 17.

Other Off-Topic Thoughts of the Week

Brian looks like he's in good shape to win Survivor. I hope he doesn't. And what's up with preempting Amazing Race for the Country Music Awards?!?
