Top 5 Dragon Games

By Erik Arneson, About.com

Dragons have been a part of legends for as long as legends have been told. The same qualities that make them good for stories make them good for board games. Here are my picks for the best games that incorporate dragons.

1. Drakon

Drakon is a dragon who likes to play games. He's captured a band of adventurers, and the first to collect five gold pieces from his stash will escape. Unfortunately, the rest will be eaten. The maze includes some magical elements, so you never really know what's around the next corner. For two to six players.

2. Talisman

A classic game from the mid-1980s, with several expansion sets also available. Players (in the role of monk, barbarian, etc.) try to gather the strength necessary to claim the Crown of Command. If you track down a copy of this game (now out of print) be sure to get the third edition, which has significant rules updates. For two to six players.

3. Dragon's Gold

Killing the dragon: not too hard. Splitting the loot: painfully difficult. And the kicker is that if you spend too much time dividing the treasure, nobody gets anything. A fast-paced negotiation game for three to six players.

4. Emerald

When a baby dragon is born, all good adventurers know that the mother dragon must have acquired plenty of gold and gems. And they all want a piece of it. Of course, you certainly don't want to be caught while you're going for the loot. For two to five players.

5. Dungeons and Dragons

The classic roleplaying game, Dungeons and Dragons exploded onto the gaming scene more than two decades ago and it continues to be strong. I remember spending hours reading the Monster Manual and the Dungeon Master's Guide, although I didn't play nearly enough to warrant the time spent with those books.
