Top 5 Prehistoric Games

By Erik Arneson, About.com

Ever since their discovery, we've been fascinated by dinosaurs. These are the best games set in prehistoric times.

1. Evo

You control -- or try to -- the evolution of dinsaurs on a remote island in this board game. In addition to dealing with major climatic shifts, you have to survive fights with other dinosaurs. Evo won the 2002 Games Magazine Game of the Year award, and it was nominated for several other awards.

2. Valley of the Mammoths

Trying to thrive as cavemen isn't as easy as it looks in the movies. There are hungry sabretooth tigers to deal with, not to mention rival tribes who would love to do you in. And don't forget how unforgiving nature can be.

3. Ursuppe

Translated as "Primordial Soup," Ursuppe puts players in control of amoeba trying to survive and grow. Similar in ways to Evo, Ursuppe allows players to work with genetic mutations.

4. Die Schlacht der Dinosaurier

Unfortunately out of print, this is the mother of all dinosaur battle games, made up of attacks and more attacks. Die Schlacht der Dinosaurier comes with great plastic dinsaur figures, most of which are topped with human riders so you know this game is historically accurate. A dicefest to end all dicefests -- terrific, mostly mindless, fun.

5. Fireball Island

An eBay favorite, sometimes fetching well over $50, Fireball Island might not be among the best in terms of gameplay, but it is a nostalgic favorite for many who grew up in the mid 1980s. The large 3D board adds to the enjoyment.
