How To Start a Board Game and Card Game Collection

By , About.com Guide

Collecting board games can be a wonderful hobby. There's an almost infinite number of ways to set up your collection, so it can reflect your personality and tastes.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Varies

Here's How:

  1. Before beginning a board game collection, you should make several decisions.
  2. Perhaps most importantly, settle on a budget. Game collecting can be as expensive or inexpensive as you want it to be.
  3. Decide on a theme. Children's games, pre-1900 games, pre-WWII games, games from a particular company, television-themed games and cartoon-themed games are but a few examples.
  4. Many gamers collect only games they actually play. If you go for a specific theme such as "television-themed games," you're likely to wind up with a few that may have value for collectors, but which are dreadful to actually play.
  5. Decide on the quality of the games you want in your collection. Sometimes a game that fits your theme is damaged and you'll have to make the tough choice of whether or not to buy it.
  6. If you're collecting for value, only buy games in excellent or very good condition. The box in particularl should be in great shape with no tears.
  7. Prepare a storage area for your games and know how to treat them right.
  8. Start buying -- and have fun!

Tips:

  1. Always be on the lookout for additions to your collection. You never know when you'll find a gem at a thrift store or a yard sale.
