Pawn

By Erik Arneson, About.com

Definition: In Chess, a pawn is one of the least powerful eight pieces owned by each player. It moves only forward and captures diagonally. A pawn can be promoted to a more powerful piece by making it all the way across the board.

In other games, 'pawn' is a generic term which can stand for any piece owned by or representing a player, such as the dog in Monopoly.

Also Known As: Token, Player Piece
Examples: (1) One common opening move in Chess is to move a pawn forward. (2) A standard Monopoly game comes with six pawns, including the dog and the thimble.
