Mayfair Games has announced plans to release Witch of Salem, an English-language edition of Der Hexer von Salem, in August or September 2009, according to a report on
BoardGameNews.com. This cooperative game, based on a series of novels by German author Wolfgang Hohlbein (which themselves were inspired by H.P. Lovecraft), is set in early 20th century New England. Players work together to close portals which are allowing the terrible "Great Old Ones" access to our world. Witch of Salem is for 2 to 4 players, ages 12 and up. It takes about 60 to 90 minutes per game.
I've played the German version several times and always had a great time. Witch of Salem is a tense, thematic game, and I fully expect it to be near the top of my list when I rank the top board games of 2009.
