Games Magazine's 2008 Games 100

Monday November 3, 2008
Every year, Games magazine publishes a list of the 100 best games published in the previous year. It is always well done, and can serve as a fantastic holiday gift-giving guide. This year's list, included in the December 2008 issue (available now) names the following as the best games of 2008:

  • Game of the Year: Tzaar (designed by Kris Burm, published by Rio Grande Games, for 2 players)
  • Abstract Strategy Game: Ponte Del Diavolo (Martin Ebel, Rio Grande Games, 2 players)
  • Advanced Strategy Game: Key Harvest (Richard Breese, Rio Grande Games, 2 to 4 players)
  • Family Game: Pandemic (Matt Leacock, Z-Man Games, 2 to 4 players)
  • Family Card Game: Palast Gerfluster (Michael Rieneck, Adlung Spiele, 3 to 5 players)
  • Family Strategy Game: Stone Age (Michael Tummellhofer, Rio Grande Games, 2 to 4 players)
  • Historical Simulation Game: Pacific Typhoon (Ben Knight, GMT Games, 3 to 7 players)
  • Party Game: Go Nuts! (Garrett Donner, Michael Steer and Brian Spence, Gamewright, 2 to 4 players)
  • Word Game: Jumbulaya (Julie and Karl Archer, Platypus Games, 2 to 4 players)

My lists of the best games published in 2008 will be posted to this site soon. In the meantime, please share your thoughts. What were the best new games you played this year? Post in the comments below!

I have to go with Dominion. No down time, plenty of depth to strategy, and most important fun.

It was a great year for games though. Agricola, Pandemic, and Last Night on Earth are way up there. And, I still haven’t tried Key Harvest and Tzaar.

The best games I played this year would be comunni and agricola. But I’m looking forward to play dominion.

But never forget. El grande is still the best.
