Atlantic City Upset by Monopoly Here & Now
Saturday April 29, 2006
The upcoming Here & Now edition of Monopoly -- which will feature all new properties chosen by popular vote via game publisher Hasbro's web site -- has upset some civic leaders in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The standard edition of Monopoly features property names taken from Atlantic City streets. Jeffrey Vasser, executive director of the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority, said this to the Associated Press: "I'm not saying we should dominate the new game, but the Boardwalk should be one of the stops. ... [I]t's a slight to not have the Atlantic City boardwalk as one of the stops." It appears that Mr. Vasser, whom one hopes doesn't take all of life this seriously, will be disappointed. Hasbro says it will not put Boardwalk in the Here & Now edition -- although the standard edition will continue to be sold. If the current vote results hold, New York City's Times Square will replace Boardwalk when the Here & Now edition is published later this year.
