American Idol Card Game Due in February 2004

Sunday November 30, 2003
As we prepare for a new season of American Idol on television, Fleer -- the trading card company -- has won the license to produce an American Idol card game and a traditional trading card set for the show.

It almost has to be better than the American Idol board game, which is simply horrible.

According to a press release, Fleer is currently developing an original card game which will be based on the 32 contestants who will compete on the live show to be named the 2004 American Idol.

The company plans on distributing the game at major retailers around the United States; it's scheduled to hit shelves on Feb. 11, 2004, to coincide with the announcement of the show's final 32 contestants.

"Fleer is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with FremantleMedia on American Idol, which is one of the most successful U.S. television franchises in recent years," said Lloyd Pawlak, senior vice-president of sales and marketing for Fleer, in the release. "The potentials with this property are endless and Fleer will make American Idol the centerpiece of our entertainment division in 2004."

The goal of Fleer's card game, according to the release, will be to "create a fun interactive environment where... American Idol fans can simulate actual elements of the hit television show."

The card game will be sold as a complete set, with a total of 110 cards. The cards will feature the 32 contestants, the judges, and more. Some cards will highlight the show's most popular songs. The cards will also incorporate photos taken from contestants' performances that helped them make it to the final 32.

"This game will be very family oriented as we know American Idol 3 will attract fans of all ages," said Pawlak. "We also plan on incorporating many of the essential items that collectors have come to know Fleer for over the recent years, such as authentic hand signed autographs from the contestants, judges and host."
