Brain Freeze, Tennis Elbow or Growling Stomach?

By October 6, 2003

Follow me on:

Cavity Sam, the poor guy who's been subjected to procedures by millions of amateur surgeons worldwide -- people playing the game Operation, is going to have a new ailment. And you can help decide what it is.

Cavity Sam turns 39 in 2004 (Operation debuted in 1965), and the folks at Milton Bradley / Hasbro decided that means he's ready for a new problem.

The choices are brain freeze, tennis elbow or growling stomach.

You can vote for the new ailment at www.operation.com or by calling 866-SAM-VOTE. The polls are open now and will close on December 31, 2003.

The winning ailment will be featured in Operation games released in fall 2004. All participants will be entered into a sweepstakes for the chance to win a grand prize $5,000 shopping spree. Other prizes include a $1,000 shopping spree and Operation t-shirts.

"What better way to honor Operation, one of our most-beloved children's games, than by giving Cavity Sam a new ailment for his 39th birthday," said Mark Stark, vice president of marketing for Hasbro Games, in a press release. "We're very excited about this campaign and look forward to seeing what America chooses for Sam."

The goal of Operation is to use the game's tweezers to remove Cavity Sam's "ailments" without bumping the sides of the opening, thus setting off the buzzer -- and Sam's red nose. Operation game is for one or more players, ages 6 and up.

In addition to voting in the official poll, you can vote in our poll: What should the new ailment be in Operation?
